In light of the Nevada GOP primary this week, former President Donald Trump has endorsed retired Army captain Sam Brown for Senate. Trump praised Brown’s patriotic spirit, referencing his status as a Purple Heart Recipient and his courage in facing both foreign and domestic enemies. Brown, who was severely injured by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, was lauded by Trump for his remarkable comeback. The former president expressed his full endorsement of Brown, ensuring voters that he will not disappoint.
Brown is competing for the GOP nomination against Dr. Jeffrey Gunter, Trump’s former ambassador to Iceland, and former state Assemblyman Jim Marchant, who has backed Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud. The general election against incumbent Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen is anticipated to be highly competitive. Initially, it was unclear whether Trump would endorse a candidate in the race, as Brown had drawn criticism from Trump supporters who preferred Gunter. Despite some distance from Trump in the past, Brown had previously endorsed him before the Iowa caucuses.
Support for Gunter has come from various sources, including a rally held by Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz in Nevada, as well as criticism from far-right activists and Mar-a-Lago regulars Laura Loomer and Roger Stone. Despite this, Brown has proven to be the strongest fundraiser among the GOP primary candidates. Following Trump’s endorsement, Rosen criticized Brown’s policy agenda, highlighting concerns over abortion, healthcare, and Social Security. She pledged to defeat what she described as “MAGA extremism” in the upcoming election.
Brown’s political journey began in the 2022 cycle, where his grassroots Senate campaign gained traction, resulting in a second-place finish in the GOP primary. Although the winner, former state Attorney General Adam Laxalt, ultimately lost to Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in the general election, Brown’s campaign garnered significant attention. Despite a previous loss in a Texas state legislative race in 2014, Brown’s rise to prominence in Nevada politics has been relatively recent, as he only moved to the state in 2018.
With Trump’s endorsement, Brown’s campaign for the Senate has received a significant boost. As a Purple Heart Recipient with a compelling personal story, Brown has captured the attention of voters and donors alike. The upcoming GOP primary will be a crucial test for Brown as he seeks to secure the nomination and face off against Democratic incumbent Sen. Jacky Rosen in what is expected to be a fiercely contested general election. Trump’s support has solidified Brown’s position within the GOP and sets the stage for an intense political battle in Nevada.
