Tesla has taken a significant step towards launching full self-driving (FSD) technology in China, as it has reached an agreement with Chinese tech giant Baidu to upgrade its mapping software. Baidu announced on Saturday that it is providing lane-level navigation services for Tesla cars. This level of navigation offers drivers detailed information and lane recommendations to enhance safety. The agreement with Baidu resolves one of the main hurdles faced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in securing government approval to rollout the FSD software in China.
Baidu has been providing mapping services to Tesla since 2020, but prior to the recent announcement, its services were limited to road-level information. The upgraded lane-level navigation will accurately render lane changes on the road the user is currently on, offering more precise guidance. With Tesla launching its new software upgrade in urban areas in China, detailed road information is now available for users for the first time. This development is significant in the world’s biggest car market.
Tesla’s Autopilot driver-assistance system is available in China, but the full FSD feature has not been rolled out. Teaming up with Baidu will enable Tesla to overcome this obstacle, as Baidu’s mapping credentials can be applied to driver-assistance functions. Chinese regulations require all self-driving systems to obtain mapping qualifications before operating on public roads, and foreign car companies must partner with licensed Chinese firms for surveying and mapping. This partnership with Baidu will allow Tesla to deploy its full self-driving system on China’s public roads.
By collaborating with Baidu, Tesla can collect surrounding data, such as road layout, traffic signs, and buildings, to enhance its self-driving technology. This partnership could also accelerate Tesla’s global development of self-driving technology, as data from China can be used to train algorithms needed for fully autonomous vehicles. Car owners in China have previously complained about Tesla’s navigation services provided by Baidu, often resorting to using other maps available on smartphones while driving. The upgraded lane-level navigation service is expected to address these issues and improve the overall user experience.
