Pope Francis is set to meet with a group of comedians and humorists from around the world, including big names like Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and Chris Rock. The comedic conclave aims to celebrate human diversity and promote a message of peace, love, and solidarity. The Vatican has announced that the pope will speak about humor to the audience and hold individual meetings with them, followed by a news conference. The event, organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education, follows a similar gathering last year of prominent artists with the pope in the Sistine Chapel.
The gathering will include 105 comedians and humorists from 15 countries, including some unlikely standup locations like East Timor. The purpose of the meeting is to highlight the importance of laughter and joy in spiritual life, as well as to spread a message of unity and understanding. Father James Martin, an influential Jesuit priest known for his work with LGBTQ Catholics, received an invitation due to his book “Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor, and Laughter are at the Heart of Spiritual Life.” Martin will join the pope for the event, where he will share his insights on the connection between faith and humor.
The Vatican press release stated that the event is an opportunity to show the beauty of human diversity and bring together individuals from different backgrounds and cultures in a spirit of harmony. With participants from countries all over the world, the meeting promises to be a unique and memorable experience for all involved. The pope, who has previously shown a sense of humor and appreciation for comedy, will lead the gathering and share his thoughts on the importance of laughter in building connections and understanding among people.
Among the attendees are 67 Italian comedians, as well as one stand-up performer from the pope’s home country of Argentina, Malena Guinzburg. The presence of such a diverse group of comedians and humorists highlights the universal appeal of comedy and its ability to transcend cultural boundaries. The event is expected to be a lively and engaging exchange of ideas, with participants sharing their unique perspectives on humor and its role in promoting peace and unity. As the headliner of the event, Pope Francis will set the tone for a celebration of laughter, joy, and the power of humor to bring people together in a spirit of friendship and understanding.
