A dramatic video captured the moment Israeli hostages were rescued from an apartment in central Gaza, following a high-risk raid that resulted in a trail of devastation and raised doubts about the United States’ cease-fire efforts. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism after the U.N. Security Council backed President Joe Biden’s proposed truce to secure the release of remaining hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated support for the proposal, while Hamas also signaled approval. However, the rescue operation added complexity to diplomatic efforts.
The video footage of the rescue shows Israeli officers racing towards an apartment building in the Nuseirat refugee camp amidst explosions, eventually locating and rescuing two of the hostages, Almog Meir Jan and Andrey Kozlov. The hostages shield their ears during loud explosions inside the apartment as the operation unfolds. Jan and Kozlov are visibly shaken but are eventually rescued. The operation also resulted in the rescue of two other hostages, Noa Argamani and Shlomi Ziv, who had been held in separate apartments nearby. The hostages were quickly reunited with their families following the rescue.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari provided details about the raid, explaining that the operation targeted two apartments simultaneously and was carried out during the daytime for surprise. The intense firefight with Hamas militants during the rescue led to the hasty transfer of the hostages to a waiting helicopter. Once the hostages were secure, commandos used the code words “we have the diamonds” to confirm the successful mission. However, the operation had a deadly toll on Palestinians in Nuseirat, with over 274 people killed, including many children, during the raid.
The aftermath of the raid depicted a grim scene, with charred bodies scattered across streets in Nuseirat and bloodied children arriving at overcrowded hospitals. The death toll in Gaza continues to rise, with more than 37,000 people killed since Israeli forces initiated their offensive following Hamas’ attacks on October 7. The offensive resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the capture of 250 hostages, with over 100 still believed to be held captive. The international community has expressed increasing outrage and Israel faces growing isolation due to the escalating conflict.
Amidst these developments, the U.S. officials are exploring the possibility of negotiating a unilateral deal with Hamas to secure the release of Americans believed to be held hostage in Gaza if current cease-fire talks falter. Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command, arrived in Israel to assess regional challenges in collaboration with Israeli military Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi. Despite the complexity of the situation, Blinken engaged with hostage families during his visit to Israel, emphasizing the importance of securing the release of all hostages. The rescue operation highlighted the intricate diplomatic and humanitarian challenges in the region, underscoring the need for continued efforts to achieve peace and stability.
