The latest FBI statistics show a significant drop in crime rates in the first quarter of this year, according to Attorney General Merrick Garland. Criminologist Jeff Asher, who analyzed the numbers, stated that this decrease in crime should be celebrated, but the trend is always uncertain. Violent and property crimes saw a significant decline in the first three months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, with murder rates falling by 26.4%, reported rapes decreasing by 25.7%, and robberies falling by 17.8%.
Reported property crimes also decreased by 15.1%, according to the Uniform Crime Report released by the FBI. Attorney General Garland emphasized that this continued decline in crime represents the lives saved and the positive impact on communities. Other experts, such as Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel of Philadelphia, are cautiously optimistic about the trend, while also recognizing the challenges that come with summer approaching.
There is speculation about the correlation between the crime decline and recent efforts to increase police forces, following calls to “Defund the Police.” Some experts believe that investments in police training are crucial to maintaining low crime rates. However, criminologist Asher noted that societal factors play a significant role in influencing crime rates, making it challenging to pinpoint the exact reasons for the fluctuations in crime.
Despite the positive trends in crime rates, public perception remains skewed, with polls showing that many believe crime is worse than it actually is. The Pew Research Center report indicates that Republicans, more than Democrats, consider tackling crime a presidential priority. The new UCR report could potentially challenge the narrative that crime has surged during President Joe Biden’s tenure, a common talking point during the Trump administration.
President Biden attributed the progress in reducing crime to increased police presence, holding violent criminals accountable, and removing illegal guns from the streets. The Biden campaign highlighted the increase in violent crime during the pandemic under the Trump administration and credited Biden for addressing the issue. The Trump campaign, however, did not respond to NBC News’ request for comment on the latest crime statistics, following a previous dismissal of the findings of decreased crime rates earlier this year.
