Howard University recently announced that it would be cutting ties with music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs due to a video that surfaced depicting his assault on ex-girlfriend Cassie in 2016. The decision by the Howard University Board of Trustees includes disbanding a scholarship in Combs’ name, terminating a 2016 gift agreement worth $1 million, and accepting the return of his honorary degree, which was conferred in 2014. The institution stated that this acceptance revokes all honors and privileges associated with the degree, and Combs’ name will be removed from all documents listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University.
The move by Howard University comes as sexual assault allegations and legal challenges continue to mount against Combs, who is currently facing a federal investigation and numerous civil lawsuits. Despite these allegations, Combs has denied all claims of sexual assault and has vowed to clear his name. In a since-settled federal lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend Cassie, she alleged that Combs raped and physically abused her during their relationship. Combs’ attorneys stated that the settlement does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing.
In May, a video was released showing Combs beating Cassie in 2016, aligning with the incident she described in her lawsuit. In response to the video, Combs issued an apology, acknowledging that his behavior was “inexcusable” and that the episode was from one of his “darkest times.” Howard University cited the video as a major factor in their decision to sever ties with Combs, stating that his behavior in the video was fundamentally incompatible with the institution’s core values and beliefs. The university emphasized its unwavering opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence.
Since November, six women have come forward with assault allegations against Combs in various lawsuits, all of which he has denied in previous statements. Howard University’s decision to distance itself from Combs reflects a growing trend of institutions taking a stand against individuals accused of abusive behavior. By revoking his honorary degree and other honors, the university is sending a strong message about the importance of maintaining integrity and upholding values of respect and non-violence. This action also serves as a reminder that individuals in positions of power must be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their status or influence.
