Shawn Fain, the leader of the United Auto Workers union, is currently under investigation by a federal monitor overseeing the union. This news comes at a crucial time for the union as it seeks to organize non-union auto plants across the country. The investigations have brought up past corruption issues within the union, which have led to previous officials being sent to prison. Fain’s victory to lead the union last year was a narrow upset and now faces allegations of misconduct from other top officials within the union.
Two other high-ranking officials in the union have launched accusations of misconduct against Fain, who has also accused them of misconduct. Fain claims to have stripped duties from Margaret Mock, the union’s Secretary Treasurer, due to alleged misconduct concerning financial oversight. Similarly, Fain also took away Rich Boyer’s duty of overseeing relations with automaker Stellantis due to dereliction of duty. However, Mock and Boyer deny these actions were justified and have made allegations against Fain as well. The details of these allegations were not included in the report.
Fain issued a statement defending his actions and stating that the investigations were a result of taking the union in a new direction. He emphasized the importance of running a democratic union and serving the membership. The union agreed to a consent decree in 2021 to settle federal corruption charges, which led to the appointment of a federal monitor. The monitor, Neil Barofsky, has expressed concerns about the union’s cooperation with the probes, citing roadblocks that hinder the investigation process.
Over the past year, Fain has risen to prominence within the union after leading simultaneous strikes against General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis. These strikes resulted in significant gains for over 140,000 union members. Fain’s visibility increased after he was welcomed by President Joe Biden at the State of the Union speech, where Biden praised his leadership. Fain, who was initially critical of both former President Donald Trump and the Biden administration, has since become a vocal supporter of Biden, who has received the endorsement of the UAW.
