In the latest development regarding the lawsuit between Elon Musk and OpenAI, the Tesla CEO has decided to withdraw his breach of contract claims against the artificial intelligence start-up and its CEO Sam Altman. This decision comes three months after Musk accused OpenAI of deviating from its mission to benefit humanity by forming a lucrative partnership with Microsoft. Musk had filed the lawsuit in March, alleging that OpenAI’s collaboration with Microsoft was in violation of an agreement to make AI breakthroughs freely available to the public.
OpenAI refuted Musk’s claims, deeming them “incoherent” and “frivolous”. In a blog post, the start-up shared emails from Musk that suggested he acknowledged the need for substantial funding to support the development of AI models. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and donated $44 million to the organization, parted ways with the company in 2018 due to disagreements with Altman regarding the direction of its research. Following Musk’s departure, OpenAI established a for-profit division that attracted investment from Microsoft.
Despite his past involvement with OpenAI, Musk has launched his own AI start-up called xAI and secured significant funding for its development. He has been vocal about the potential dangers of AI, describing it as an “existential threat” to humanity. Recently, Musk criticized OpenAI’s partnership with Apple and threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies if the start-up’s technology is integrated into iPhones. He suggested storing Apple devices in Faraday cages at the door to prevent interference with OpenAI’s technology.
The reasons behind Musk’s decision to drop the lawsuit against OpenAI remain unclear, as the court filing did not provide an explanation for the dismissal. OpenAI has chosen not to comment on the matter, while Musk has yet to respond to requests for further clarification. Despite the ongoing disputes and controversies surrounding AI technology, it is evident that Musk remains deeply invested in the development and implications of artificial intelligence. As the industry continues to evolve, the dynamics between key players like Musk and OpenAI will undoubtedly influence the future trajectory of AI innovation and regulation.
