Bitcoin & Beyond is an educational series by The Rollup team focused on new builders in the Bitcoin ecosystem, providing deep technical insights into innovative scaling projects. In a recent episode, the team discussed building Bitcoin’s first ZK rollup with Orkun from Citrea, a technology promising to enhance Bitcoin’s utility while preserving security. Rollups use another blockchain as the data availability layer, allowing for scalability improvements without compromising security.
Citrea’s motivation behind building a zero-knowledge rollup on Bitcoin is driven by the limitations in Bitcoin’s block size and script capabilities. By leveraging modularity, developers can build customizable stacks for various applications like payment rollups and gaming rollups. This flexibility enables different optimizations for scaling blockchains without altering their core protocol. Security is crucial for any layer built on top of Bitcoin, and Citrea utilizes Bitcoin as a data availability layer to ensure high security.
A key component of Citrea’s innovation is the Clementine Bridge, a BitVM-based two-way peg that optimistically verifies ZK proofs to move bitcoins in and out of the system. This mechanism reduces the need for frequent settlements by aggregating proofs from Bitcoin, enhancing security. The evolution of BTC bridges has shifted towards modern crypto-economic security bridges like Clementine, which optimistically verifies ZK proofs, making the process efficient and scalable.
Looking forward, Citrea plans to introduce volition, a hybrid model balancing on-chain security with off-chain cost efficiency. This model allows applications to choose their data storage method based on specific needs. Orkun also highlights the importance of transaction fees for Bitcoin’s long-term security, with Citrea’s use of Bitcoin as a data availability layer contributing to maintaining miner incentives and network security. By bridging Bitcoin’s resilience with rollup flexibility, Citrea aims to push the boundaries of what’s possible with Bitcoin. Stay updated on Bitcoin & Beyond series for more insights into evolving Bitcoin scaling solutions.
